Probably the first travel tip you’ll hear when planning your trip to Ireland is: “You have to visit the Cliffs of Moher.” And it’s true — you can’t miss them! Keep reading to learn more about this incredible place.
What do the iconic Cliffs of Moher mean?
They’re a natural landmark located in County Clare, on Ireland’s west coast. The cliffs stretch for about 8 kilometers (5 miles) along the Atlantic Ocean and reach heights of up to 214 meters (702 feet) above sea level.
They were formed over 300 million years ago from layers of shale and sandstone. Surrounded by stunning scenery, they stand as a symbol of Ireland’s wild Atlantic coast. The cliffs are also home to a wide variety of birds, such as guillemots and razorbills.
This site is extremely popular — every year, over a million visitors come to admire this iconic landscape filled with history and geological wonders.
How to get there from Drogheda or Dublin using public transport
From Drogheda
There are several ways to reach the Cliffs of Moher. You can take a train from Drogheda to Galway (about 2.5 hours) and then a bus that takes around 2 more hours. Another option is to join a guided tour from Dublin with transportation included.
If you prefer to drive, just follow the M1 toward Dublin, then take the M50 and N7 until you connect with the N18. Continue to Ennis, and from there follow the N85 to Ennistymon until you reach the cliffs.
From Dublin
You can take a direct bus to the Cliffs of Moher from Busáras station (about 4 hours). Another option is to join an organized day trip from Dublin city center. If you prefer driving, follow the M7 toward Limerick, then the N18 to Ennis, and finally the N85 to the cliffs.
Why should you visit the Cliffs of Moher?
